Joshua Lee Burgess, 32, entered the sheriff’s office lobby around 9:30 a.m. Sunday and told the dispatcher that he wanted to turn himself in. Once the dispatcher started searching for possible arrest warrants, Burgess told her that she wouldn’t find his name or information because he had just killed someone that day.

The victim was his 15-year-old daughter, Zaria Joshalyn Burgess. Joshua Burgess told the dispatcher that the incident occurred that morning. He also gave detailed information about his daughter’s death and where her body was located.

The teen’s body was found by Union County deputies in her father’s house, where she had been visiting that weekend.

Detectives, crime-scene investigators and an agent from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation were sent to conduct interviews and gather evidence.

A medical examiner will determine the official cause of death.
