Fifty-six sworn officers within the police department have tested positive for coronavirus since March, according to a police spokesperson.

Of the officers with coronavirus, 17 have recovered, police said. One officer is hospitalized, while the others are recovering at home, a spokesperson told McClatchy News in an e-mail.

Those who are positive for the virus aren’t the only police officers unable to work in the city. Seventy-one officers are currently in quarantine and there are 151 total police personnel quarantined, the department said.

The San Antonio Police Department has 2,463 sworn officers, a spokesperson said.

Reasons for the police department’s rise in coronavirus cases were not given, but the spike corresponds with a large increase in the city’s overall numbers.
