The National Mall
The National Mall, a park envisioned during the 18th
century, remained undeveloped until the McMillan Plan
of 1902 urged a return to the original design of French
architect Pierre L'Enfant. During the 20th century
the area of the Mall was cleaned up, establishing
a boulevard that stretches from the Capitol building
to the Washington Monument, seen here in the distance.
